Monticelli is situated in the heart of Central Italy, in the Region of Umbria, 25 minutes by car away from Tuscany. The cultural attractions and the beautiful landscapes of all Umbria, Toscana and upper Lazio are all closeby.
Perugia, Todi, Cortona and the Trasimeno Lake are each twenty minutes away, Assisi is about thirty and Siena sixty. Rome and Florence can be reached in just over one hour and and a half. Near Monticelli there are also art cities like Orvieto, Gubbio and Montepulciano.
One looses oneself in the pictoresque countryside amongst mildly undulated hills and centuries old olive trees. Umbria deserves to be discovered: it is a land of shepherds, still largely untouched, with a wild and authentic landscape. Nearby ones will find a pleasant in nearby restaurants by tables covered with local ham, cheese, fresh home-made pasta and a good glass of wine, chosen among the many local varieties (Grechetto, Orvieto, Sagrantino, Montepulciano, Sangiovese) produced by the renowned Umbrian wineries. This will complete properly your commune with nature and art.
Only two kilometers from the Castle there is one of the last forests with very tall trees existing in the plains of Italy. This forest is protected by the European Union because it has been untouched by at least two thousand years and because it has many rare species of birds, other animals, trees and plants. We owe this to the benedictine monks who have owned the forest for about 1000 years (until 1860) and to the later owners.
