onticelli was originally a small medieval settlement dating back to the early 12th century . On this site 28 apartments of very different sizes have been completely restored, with all modern facilities available. The oldest parts of the settlement were four military towers constructed between the years 1100 and 1380 to control the valley west of Perugia, the capital of Umbria. The walls of the towers are over one meter thick. A beautiful hall with a cross-bowed ceiling dating back to the year 1230 is situated on the ground floor of "Il Palazzo" (the palace). The main buildings of the hamlet are: Il Palazzo, Torre Piccola, Case Corte con Torre, Ex Stalle, Grande Magazzino Agricolo, Piccoli Annessi Sparsi.
The Castle of Borgo Monticelli is located on top of a small, prominent hill lying in the middle of a large valley. From the hilltop plateau there is a wonderful view extending for many kilometers in all directions. The medieval city of Perugia is clearly visible from the castle and the surrounding gardens.
For the first centuries after the towers were built they were part of a fortified benedictine monastry. Later the castle belonged to the family of counts Cesi, who were appointed princes of Monticelli by the pope. In the late 1400s the family converted Monticelli into a summer residence by removing the defence walls. They filled the space between the two largest towers by creating a large palace. The family also added new buildings to the oldest tower now named "Torre Piccola" (small tower). All these transformations are clearly visible by looking carefully at the walls.
